Yorkshire
win the English Ladies’ County Finals
At High Post Golf Club, Wiltshire,
on the 3 September Yorkshire won the English Ladies’
Golf Association County Finals on points. Having beaten
Warwickshire on the first day 5-4 they then lost their
second match to Glamorgan 5-4, this was a very close
finish, which saw the last match go to the 20th. In
the final match they beat Hampshire 8-1.
Susan Heath the Yorkshire Captain
said “The mornings 3 nil win set the girls up
and they played out of there socks this afternoon.
This is a great result for Yorkshire”.
The weeks play saw some excellent
golf, which included two holes-in-one, one of the
by Naomi Edwards playing for Yorkshire who also had
an Albatross on the 2nd hole today.
Katie Thompson the 13 year old from
Hampshire had her debut in the final match today against
Yorkshire. Katie is the youngest player at the championship
and played well, having come back from 3 down to lose
on the 18th.
Glamorgan for the second year
running were the runners-up with a total of 13 points,
Vicki Thomas played for the team having first played
at the County Finals 29 years ago. They lost 7-2 against
Hampshire on the first day and then mounted a tremendous
fight back campaign, beating Yorkshire 5-4 and Warwickshire
6-3. Warwickshire and Hampshire both had 12 points.
THURSDAY 2nd SEPTEMBER
9.00 a.m. and 1.15 p.m. Hampshire v Warwickshire
9.45 a.m. and 2.15 p.m. Yorkshire v Glamorgan
Warwicshire beat Hampshire 5-4 and
Glamorgan beat Yorkshire 5-4.
Hampshire and Yorkshire led the
morning foursomes 2-1. The foursomes included two
holes-in-one on the 11th, the first by Layla Ahmed
and in the next match by Naomi Edwards.
The singles saw an exciting finish
as Warwickshire fought back, winning four of their
matches. Yorkshire v Glamorgan all hinged on the last
match between Rachael Lomas and Denise Richards, which
went to the 20th where Denise won.
Denise an ex-international golfer
has been playing County golf since the mid 80’s.
Denise realised on the 15th that her match was vital.
She said “Following a big defeat yesterday this
has been a boost for the team. It’s all to play
for tomorrow”.
All four counties are level,
which promises an exciting days play.
WEDNESDAY
1st SEPTEMBER

Glamorgan v Hampshire
9.45 a.m. and 2.15 p.m. Warwickshire v Yorkshire
Hampshire beat Glamorgan 7-2 and Yorkshire
beat Warwickshire 5-4, both teams had strong
starts, winning their respective foursomes 2 -1. The
weather was perfect, a great start for this years
event at High Post Golf Club.
Jackie Keay the Hampshire Captain said, “I have
a brilliant young team. We have had a hard battle
to get here, anything else will be a bonus”.
Katie Thompson, the youngest player, 13 today is looking
forward to her debut County Finals match.
Kerry Smith was in the winning team when Hampshire
last won the event in 1995. Kerry lost her foursomes
match with Sarah White to Lydia Hall and Anna Highgate
(Curtis Cup player) 2&1. Hampshire then had a
great start to the singles when Kerry birdied the
1st and Layla Ahmed had an eagle.
Warwickshire won the first three singles matches,
Claire Dowling winning the top match against Emma
Duggleby (Curtis Cup player) at the 21st hole. This
was Claire’s first competitive match at this
level for 12 years. She said “I went out hoping
to get as far as I could so I am thrilled to have
won”. Yorkshire fought back to win the last
three singles and the exciting match 5-4.
