European Girls' Team Championship

Finals
The England team finish 11th at the European Girls’ Team Championships. The overall winners were Sweden, who beat France in the final and Spain took the bronze medal having beaten Austria.

The English team played Wales on the final day, they played well particularly in the foursomes, taking four out of four points in the match play stages. Claire Aitken (Mid Kent) and Melissa Reid (Chevin) won 5 & 4 and Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale) and Kiran Matharu (Sand Moor) won at the 19th. In the singles the other points came from Melissa who won 6 & 4 and Florentyna who halved her match after being 3 down at the 14th.

Angela Caton the team captain said “This was a good team effort in difficult conditions, the weather was horrendous.” The girls are going on to compete in the English Girls’ Championship and Florentyna and Kiran have been selected to represent England at the European Young Masters, in Austria.

Semi finals
The England girls did very well in the foursomes this morning, having an early 7.20 tee time. Claire Aitken and Melissa Reid won 6 & 4, Kiran Matharu and Florentyna Parker 2 down and 3 to play won on the 18th.

In the afternoon Florentyna lost 2 & 1, loosing the 16th and 17th. Kiran and Melissa both lost 3 & 2. The final score being England 2, Germany 3. England face Wales tomorrow for 11th place, following Wales’ defeat of Scotland 5, 0.

Quarter finals
England are now placed as the top country in flight two, as 9th qualifiers. England and Wales have both had a bye today and England play Germany tomorrow, Wales and Scotland will play each other in the semi finals.

Round 2
Play was also suspended due to weather. Thunder and lightning brought play to a halt with only a few players having completed their rounds by mid day. Eventually abandoned at 3.30 so the matchplay positions were decided on the Round 1 scores.

England were put into 8th position, matching Italy who were 9th, on 320. The decision was reversed, as the 4th none-counting scores were the same, 82, England found themselves in 9th position. The best score of each country was taken, Italys' top score was a 75. The England best results were by Melissa Reid and Florentyne Parker who were both on 76.

Round 1
European Girls' Team Championship is currently taking place at the Golf National Golf Club, Paris, France (par 72). The first round England team scores are: Claire Aitken (Mid-Kent) 78, Kiran Matharu (Sand Moor) 82, Florentyna Parker (Royal Birkdale) 76, Melissa Reid (Chevin) 76. With the top three scores to count England are currently lying in eight place with a total score of 230. The top 8 teams qualify for flight one.

Angela Caton the team Captain and Steve Cooper the team coach are pleased with the spirit in the English camp, this is a very difficult course with high rough and narrow fairways. Nearly every competitor has found the rough during their game and Angela said “The English girls fought hard for their scores, we are hopefull to finish in the top eight tomorrow”.
