England’s girls completed
a hat trick of wins over the England Under 16 boys’
team with a convincing 13-5 scoreline at Piltdown,
Sussex, yesterday (October 10).
It’s the third time in a row
that the Under 18 girls have won the Marian Carr Salver
and team captain Joy Trafford was delighted with their
performance.
“The golf was brilliant, on
both sides, and I was very pleased with the girls,”
she said. “They put on a really fine display
and everyone made a contribution, scoring at least
one point each.”
The girls made a perfect start to
the match, winning all six of the morning foursomes.
Then they followed up with seven singles wins.
The team was a mixture of experienced
players and up-and-coming girls who were playing at
this level for the first time. “I was so pleased
with the new ones,” said Joy. “One of
two of them lost quite heavily in the singles but
their heads didn’t go down and they fought to
the end. They were all thrilled that they got at least
a point and it was a good experience for them all.”
The new players at this level included
Hannah Barwood and Laura Cutler, who were paired together
for the foursomes and won an impressive point, fighting
back from three down with four to play to win one
up.
Other notable performances during
the day included the 4/3 singles win of England girl
international Felicity Johnson over North of England
U16 champion Adam Hodkinson. “She was very steady
and really didn’t let him in at all. It was
a very good win,” said Joy.

England girls will bid for a hat trick of successive
wins in their annual match against the boys at Piltdown
Golf Club, Sussex, on Sunday (October 10).
A strong under-18 side has been
named to defend the Marian Carr Memorial Salver, which
remembers the former secretary of the English Ladies’
Golf Association.
The team includes Felicity Johnson
(Harborne) and Katrina Holford (Ingestre Park), who
helped win the Nations Cup for England at the British
Girls’ Championship.
They are joined by three fellow
members of the England team which recently won the
Girls’ Home Internationals for the fifth year
in a row: Claire Aitken (Mid-Kent), Jodi Ewart (Catterick)
and Rachel Jennings (Izaak Walton).
Emma Sheffield (Newark) and Joanne
Hodge (Knowle) add more experience to the 12-strong
line-up, which is completed by six up-and-coming players.
They are: Hannah Barwood (Knowle), Hannah Burke (Mid-Herts),
Rachel Connor (Manchester), Laura Cutler (Warley Park)
and Natasha Podmore (Vale Royal Abbey).
Team captain Joy Trafford believes
her girls will win the match: “They will all
be up for the challenge and we plan to keep the Salver,”
she said.
The girls take on the England
boys’ under 16 team, which includes the ten
youngsters who defeated the Scots 11-4 last weekend.
The girls won the Salver last year and in 2002.
