SLGA Scottish U16’s Championship
12 April 2004
ELGA took a squad of 14 players
to the recent U16’s Scottish Girls Championship,
played over the Strathtyrum Golf Course in St. Andrews.
The squad was a mixture of experienced
Elite squad members and more inexperienced Regional
and Eagle squad players, with the onus for the latter
girls on gaining Championship experience and learning
how to prepare for events.
The Strathtyrum course played very
short, but with tricky greens and strengthening winds
a deft short game was required. The English players
results included several fine individual scores, with
Henrietta Brockway finishing third (71, 68) in the
Championship, denied victory by excellent scores from
Krystal Caithness and Carly Booth. Julia Norman also
received a prize for the best second round gross in
the U16’s catergory (67). However, English squad
players were unfortunate to miss out on better placings
in the Championship, with five of them finishing in
the top 10.
In the team event, the team selection for Scotland
proved a canny one as Booth, Kaithness and last years
winner Roseanne Niven joined together to form the
winning team. The England B squad of Henrietta Brockway,
Emilee Taylor and Julia Norman came second, showing
their England A counterparts, who finished 4th, the
way home.
This was an excellent event
for all concerned and should provide a springboard
for many for the rest of the season.
