Melissa Reid wins Daily
Telegraph Junior Championship

England’s Melissa
Reid has won the girls’ title in the Daily Telegraph
Junior Championship in Sun City, South Africa.
The 17-year-old English girls’
champion scored a one-shot win after holding off a
charge from Scotland’s Kylie Walker.
Kylie was nine shots adrift after
36 holes but her final round 73 almost closed the
gap. Somerset’s Donna O’Connell finished
third.
Melissa, from Chevin, Derbyshire,
succeeds England’s Natalie Haywood to the girls’
title. Other past English winners have included Sophie
Walker and Rebecca Hudson.

Reid has a commanding six-shot lead after two rounds
of the Daily Telegraph Junior Championship in Sun
City, South Africa.
The 17-year-old from Chevin, Derbyshire,
extended her first-round lead when she added a 75
on the Lost City course - where the hazards include
a huge pit complete with crocodiles – to her
opening 73.
Melissa’s closest challenger
for the girls’ championship is Somerset’s
Donna O’Connell, 17, who has scored 78, 76.
Scotland’s Kylie Walker has dropped back to
third place after adding a second round 81 to her
76.
The third and final round
takes place today, back on the Gary Player course.

English girls’ champion Melissa
Reid is at the top of the girls’ leaderboard
after the first round of the Daily Telegraph Junior
Championship in Sun City, South Africa.
The 17-year-old from Chevin in
Derbyshire posted a 73 on the Gary Player course to
lead Scotland’s Kylie Walker by three shots.
Melissa, an England girl international, played the
back nine in two-under par.
Two more English girls share third
place with scores of 78: Donna O’Connell, 17,
from Somerset and Chantal Scott, 18, from Dorset.
The boys’ event is
led by Yorkshire’s John Parry who scored a level
par 72. Today’s second round will be played
on the Lost City Course at the Gary Player Country
Club.
