European Girls' Team Championship
and French Championship 14 April 2004
Six members
of the English Ladies’ Golf Association Elite
World Class Potential Squad travelled to the Golf
National near Versailles, the two day visit was in
preparation for the European Girls' Team Championship
in July. Captain Angela Caton and coach Steve Cooper
accompanied the players. The course is the venue for
the French Open only six days prior to the championship
and will prove a stiff test for this age group and
the experience gained was invaluable in England's
bid to win a medal for the first time in this event.
The group was joined by six members of the Under 21
squad and a total of seven players made the record
low cut of 150 and two girls qualified for the under
18 tournament the Trophy Cartier. During the matchplay
rounds Felicity Johnson played against Sophie Walker,
Felicity birdied 17 and 18 to win 2 up, whilst Florentyna
Parker and Naomi Edwards won through to the second
round. The English challenge was over by Saturday
evening, all players but Sophie having lost to members
of the strong Spanish contingent.
This was a good squad performance and a huge improvement
on recent years particularly given the youth of the
party, 2 aged 14, two aged 16. Only Spain equalled
the number of qualifiers.
