in the Duke of York Young Champions Trophy
17 September 2004
YOUNG WELSH ACE SPREADEAGLES DUKE
OF YORK FIELD IN FIRST ROUND AT KINGSBARNS
Zac Gould, 16-year-old winner
of the European Young Masters boys' title in Austria
in late July, recaptured that brilliant form to spreadeagle
the high-class field in the first round of The Duke
of York Young Champions' Trophy 54-hole tournament
over the Kingsbarns Links, Fife in Scotland today
(Wednesday).
Gould was celebrating the Royal
& Ancient Golf Club announcement earlier in the
day that he had been named in a squad of 29 Great
Britain & Ireland players to prepare for the Walker
Cup match against the
United States at Chicago Golf Club on August 13 and
14 next year.
Gould, a junior member of the Vale of Glamorgan Golf
Club in South Wales, shot a five-under-par 67 to open
up a five-shot lead from last year's winner, Rikard
Karlberg (Sweden) with Rory McIlroy (Ireland) in third
place on 73.
McIlroy, from Holyrood, Belfast,
finished fourth in the R&A Junior Open at Barassie,
Scotland in July.
The girls' section at Kingsbarns
is being led by Anna Nordqvist (Sweden) with a 76,
one shot ahead of 16-year-old Azahara Munzo (Spain),
winner of the British girls' open amateur championship
the last time she was in Scotland -- several weeks
ago at Lanark Golf Club.
