Kent golfers honour Karen Stupples
21 December 2004
Karen Stupples, winner of the 2004 Weetabix British
Women’s Open winner, has been honoured by the
Kent golf club which she first joined as a 15-year-old.
She was made an honorary member of Royal Cinque Ports
Golf Club in Deal at a ceremony which attracted a
big turnout of members.
Stupples, 31, was quick to pay her own tribute to
the golf club: ”Everyone at Deal, but particularly
the lady members, have been fantastic to me all the
way through. Whenever I wanted someone to play with
they were there. Anything I needed was never too much
trouble. They’ve been so supportive and encouraging.
If I won a competition they were excited about it.”
She’s given them plenty to be excited about
during 2004, a year which Stupples describes as “an
absolute dream come true.” In March she won
the Welch’s/Fry’s Championship on the
LPGA Tour in America, and followed up at Sunningdale
in August when she won the British Women’s Open,
becoming only the third Englishwoman to win a major.
Stupples has played on the LPGA Tour since 1999 and
is based in Florida, but she’s home for Christmas
and enjoying a host of honours. She’s been featured
on the BBC Sports Personality of the Year programme,
invited to a Christmas reception at Buckingham Palace
and been made a vice-president of the Kent ladies’
county association.
