Young Welsh Ace Wins Duke Of York
Trophy and see Melissa Reid update below;
26 September 2004
Teenaged Welsh wizard Zac Gould
capped fabulous nine-week stretch of brilliant golf
by winning the prestigious The Duke of York Young
Champions Trophy tournament over the Kingsbarns Links,
Fife on Friday. The 16-year-old from Vale of Glamorgan,
South Wales won the European Young Masters in Austria
at the end of July, helped Europe win the Junior Ryder
Cup in the United States earlier this month, and was
named as a member of the 2005 Walker Cup preparatory
squad on Wednesday - the same day that he smashed
the Kingsbarns Links amateur record by four shots
with a five-under-par 67.
"Everything clicked for me
in that first round and though I never quite played
as well as that in the second and third rounds, it
gave me a lot of confidence to handle the Kingsbarns
course," said Zac who wants to go to a United
States college on a golf scholarship in a year or
so."
I reckon playing over there on the
college circuit would do my game a lot of good."Gould,
who is coached by Peter Johnson, started the final
round of the 54-hole tournament, contested by the
Under-18 national champions of 19 European countries,
tied with another bright young prospect, 15-year-old
Rory McIlroy from Belfast but forged clear with a
closing round of 71 (34-37) for a final total of four-under-par
212.
Zac birdied the third, fourth and
fifth to put daylight between himself and his playing
partner and never looked like being headed after that,
even though he ran up a double bogey 6 at the 10th.
Gould's immediate response was to birdie the 11th
and 12th!
What a young player! What a prospect!McIlroy
felt his putting let him down as he closed with a
74 (36-38)to take second place on 215 - two shots
ahead of the defending champion Rikard Kalberg (Sweden)
who had a splendid 68 (32-37) for 217..Like Zac Gould,
Anna Nordqvist (Sweden) began the last round in a
tie for the lead, in her case with Fabienne In-Albon
(Switzerland) with Spain's Azahara Munoz, winner of
the British girls' open title at Lanark in August,
breathing down their necks.Anna, again like the boys'
winner, outclassed her rivals with a brilliant final
round of two-under-par 70 (36-34) to win the title
by five shots from In-Albon with last year's girls'
winner, Justine Barbier (Belgium) coming through into
third place on 231 with a 74.
