Sophie Walker wins the Leveret
25 July 2004
Loughborough
University student Sophie Walker (Kenwick), beaten
semi-finalist in this year's British women's open
amateur championship at Gullane, won The Leveret,
a 36-hole open tournament played at Formby, this year's
Curtis Cup venue and organised by Scotland international
team manager and former champion Fiona Anderson (on
Sunday).
Windy conditions boosted the afternoon
CSS from 71 to 73 and Sophie's 75 and 69 for 144 was
a very good effort indeed by last year's English stroke-play
champion.
She won the title by a single shot
from Welsh cap and Lancashire county champion Natalee
Evans (Pleasington) who followed up a morning 78 with
a 67, a brilliant round in the conditions and easily
the best of the day by anyone in the good-class field
of 58.
Scottish Under-21 champion Jenna
Wilson (Strathaven), home for the summer holidays
from her golf scholarship at San Diego University,
California, finished third on 146 with a steady 75
and 71.
"It's a course for a big thinker
not a big hitter and I think that is reflected in
the winner we got," said Fiona Anderson.
