Emma Duggleby selected to represent GB&I in Espirito Santo Trophy
29 August 2004

Stephanie Evans, Emma Duggleby and Clare Queen have been selected to represent Great Britain & Ireland in the World Amateur Team Championships that will be played at the Westin Rio Beach Resort and Golf Club, Puerto Rico, from 20th to 23rd October.

Emma Dugglegy, 32, has a string of successes to her name but at Alwoodley just missed out on her first Ladies’ British Stroke Play title. She has played in three Curtis Cups and was in the GB&I team that contested the Espirito Santo Trophy in 2002 in Malaysia.

Queen, 21, defeated Evans and Shelley McKevitt in a sudden death play-off to win the Ladies’ British Stroke Play Championship on Friday at Alwoodley Golf Club. As an 18 year old, she was the British Girls Open Amateur Champion and has since gone on to gain many representative honours for Scotland and a place in the 2003 team for the Vagliano Trophy Match at County Louth. She was a reserve for this year’s Curtis Cup match at Formby.

Stephanie Evans, 20, a left-handed player has represented Wales since 2002 when she played in the Home Internationals at The Berkshire. This will be her debut in a team representing GB&I.

The Championships are being played for only the second time over two courses, the River designed by Greg Norman and the Ocean, designed by Tom and George Fazio, where players from the Home Nations will be competing for the Espirito Santo Trophy. This handsome trophy once belonged to the Tsar of Russia, Nicolas 11, and was gifted to the Championship by Ricardo and Silvia Espirito Santo of Portugal.

As is the case in the men’s Championship for the Eisenhower Trophy, The United States with 13 wins have dominated the honours in the women’s event, but with France winning in 2000 and Australia two years ago in Malaysia, the opportunity is there for a continuation of wins by other countries.

Earlier this year, Kim Andrew was appointed captain of the team, thus adding to a golfing career at the highest level. She represented GB&I in two Curtis Cups and would have played in the 1998 Espirito Santo Trophy had the politics in Chile not prevented the ladies’ team travelling to South America.
