Areas for Championship Winners
01 October 2004
For the
second year in succession, on the 28th September,
the final of the Health Perception Ladies Amateur
Championship finished in an exciting play off on Wentworth’s
Championship West Course.
The competition is unique in inviting participation
from individuals in both Southern and Northern Ireland
as well as Great Britain and this year over 23,000
players entered from the 2,800+ clubs that are members
of the Ladies Golf Union.
Just 16
players made it through to this unique competition
final, which is sponsored by Health Perception, the
UK’s leading Glucosamine suppliers. Elizabeth
Martinez-Gray, playing off a handicap of 14, scored
31 points over one of the most demanding UK courses
which, at 6094 yards is one of the longest women’s
championship courses.
Elizabeth, from Bromley in Kent, is a member of The
High Elms Golf Club and got to the final by beating
97 players in a tough regional final at Burhill GC,
that again saw a three-way tie, decided on that occasion
by a count back. Elizabeth, 37, is a BT employee and
took up golf when she stopped playing tennis. In the
play off she beat Debbie Knight from Bournemouth,
a member of Knighton Heath Golf Club, off a handicap
of 28. Debbie has only been playing golf since May
2003, so is justifiably thrilled to have come through
to the final of such a prestigious competition, let
alone reaching a playoff.
The play
off, which started on Hole 1, looked all over on Martinez-Gray’s
drive that drifted right, off the first and straight
into the thickest rough. However an excellent recovery
shot saw her make the green in four and down in a
further two. For her unlucky opponent, a hooked drive
unsettled her already tight nerves and she left herself
in an unwinnable position.
Third place
went to Helen Griffin from Droitwitch Golf & Country
Club who won on a card playoff from Moira Jones from
Rhuddlan Golf Club in Flintshire.
Elizabeth received her trophy from the Managing Director
of Health Perception – Olympic Gold Medallist,
David Wilkie MBE.
"This
is the best day of my golfing career so far…
I’m over the moon!" Elizabeth Martinez-Gray.
