England international Jodi Ewart crowned an “amazing”
year when she won the girls’ title in the 54-hole
Daily Telegraph Junior Championship at the Dubai Creek
Golf and Yacht Club.
The 17-year-old from Catterick came from two shots
behind to score a two-stroke victory over Melissa
Reid, the defending champion and English girls’
champion. “It’s my biggest individual
title and it’s great that I’ve won it,”
said Jodi.
The two teenagers played together in the final group
in the last round and, for Jodi, it became a matchplay
battle. “I wasn’t really thinking about
what I was scoring, just about the shots I needed
to get back,” she said.
She edged ahead after the 11th and held the advantage
over the closing holes. ”I knew I was a shot
ahead with three to play but those holes are probably
the hardest on the course and you need to keep your
concentration,” said Jodi, who hit her best
drive of the week on the 18th.
Her success capped a remarkable year of achievement
which began when Jodi helped England win the European
girls’ team championship. “The final day
of the Europeans was probably the best day of my life,”
she said. “It was so big because we were doing
it for England and because we were the underdogs.”
She went on to be part of the winning England teams
in the girls’ International Matches and the
Home Internationals.
“It’s been an amazing year,” she
said.
