Lisa McGowan wins British Mid-Amateur
06 July
2005
Surrey’s Lisa McGowan birdied her way to victory
in the 2005 Ladies’ British Mid-Amateur Championship
at Walton Heath.
The Worplesdon player staged a fighting finish to
the 54-hole tournament with birdies on two of the
last three holes to beat Scotland’s Sarah Bishop
by a shot.
Her win gives her a place in final qualifying for
the Weetabix Women’s British Open. This will
be played at Hillside on July 25, just before the
championship at Royal Birkdale, which takes place
from July 28-31.
Lisa finished the Mid-Amateur at two-over par, topping
a tightly packed leaderboard. Only three shots separated
the first five players and the battle for the title
was intensely close over the last nine holes of the
tournament.
Sarah Bishop made the first move, taking a slender
one-stroke advantage with a birdie on the par five
14th. But Lisa quickly struck back.
Her birdie four on the 16th squared the score and
she immediately moved ahead with a birdie two on the
17th. Both players bogeyed the 18th and the title
belonged to the three-times Surrey champion.
Rachael Lomas (Hallowes) scored the best round of
the day with a two-under par 72 and finished third,
on countback from Caroline Marron (Bromborough). The
best round of the tournament was the four-under par
70 scored by England international Lisa Ball (Matfen
Hall) on the first day.
