England’s hat trick triumph in Senior Home Internationals
6 October 2005

England won the Senior Home Internationals for the third year in a row when they beat Ireland 6-1 on the final day of the matches at Radyr, near Cardiff.

ELGA chairman Jenny Clink said: “It was a fantastic win. Our seniors’ champion, Chris Quinn, led from the front with six wins from six matches, but it was a really great team effort and everyone played their part.”

The triumph crowns a superb year for England, completing a hat trick of wins in the Home Internationals, Senior Home Internationals and Girls’ International Matches. England also took gold and silver medals in European team championships and England players were crucial to GB&I’s Vagliano Trophy win over Europe.

England is the only nation to have won the Senior Home Internationals since the championship was launched in 2003 and the team retained their title in style. They beat all three of their rival nations, won 16 out of their 21 matches, halved two and conceded just four points during the series.

On the final day the team got off to a perfect start against Ireland, winning both morning foursomes. English seniors’ champion Chris Quinn scored the first singles point with a fine 7/6 win and then Carole Caldwell secured the victory when she beat her opponent 2/1. More points were added by Pat Wrightson and Chris Stirling who both also won 2/1.

Scotland beat Wales 6½ -½ to take second place in the series.

The England team, captained by Hilary Green (Royal Lytham & St Anne’s), was: Geraldine Bray (Littlestone), Carole Caldwell (Sunningdale), Christine Quinn (South Winchester), Hilary Smyth (Pannal), Christine Stirling (Meon Valley) Christine Watson (Beaconsfield) and Pat Wrightson (Huddersfield).

England beat Scotland 4½-2½ in a tightly contested battle to take the lead after the second day of the Senior Home Internationals at Radyr, near Cardiff.

The result, following Tuesday’s win over Wales, puts the team on course to realise their ambition of scoring a third consecutive win in this championship.

Now, England play Ireland, who lost 6-1 to Scotland on the first day of the tournament and were then beaten 4½-2½ by Wales.

All England’s points against Scotland were scored on either the 17th or 18th holes and team captain Hilary Green said: “It was very exciting, very close and the standard of golf was absolutely tremendous.”

English seniors’ champion Chris Quinn continued her winning foursomes partnership with Pat Wrightson and then triumphed in a titanic singles battle to again contribute the maximum two points to the scoreline.

Chris and her singles opponent, Pam Williamson, halved the first nine holes before the Scot won the 10th with a birdie. Chris pulled her straight back on the 11th but immediately lost the 12th to another birdie. The England player squared the match with a birdie on the 14th, also won the 15th and 16th and settled the match with a half on 17. “Chris played absolutely stunning golf,” said Hilary.

Chris Stirling secured her point with a brave up-and-down on the 18th, which halved the hole and gave her a one-up win. Then Carole Caldwell, who was never behind in her match, sealed the day’s victory with a 2/1 success. A final half point was added by Hilary Smyth.

England made a winning start to their defence of the Senior Home Internationals, beating Wales 5½-1½ on the first day of the matches at Radyr.

The team, who are bidding for a hat trick of wins, won both morning foursomes and then followed up with 3½ points from the afternoon’s five singles.

English seniors champion Chris Quinn and partner Pat Wrightson led the way in the foursomes when they fought back to win a tight match against Vicki Thomas and Verona Mackenzie. The England pair were ahead only on the 16th and 17th – but that was enough for a 2/1 win.

Meanwhile Chris Stirling and Hilary Smyth took the lead on the third hole and were always in front until they closed out the opposition 4/2.

In the singles, Chris Quinn and Chris Stirling made certain of the win with two confident performances.

Chris Quinn again got the better of Vicki Thomas in a match of two halves. The Welsh player held the advantage for much of the front nine but Chris moved ahead on the 10th and went on to win 3/2. Chris Stirling won the first hole of her singles and was never behind in her match, finishing off with a convincing 5/4 scoreline.

Another point came from Carole Caldwell who showed all her fighting qualities when she won three of the last four holes to come back from 2 down to 1 up. Chris Watson had victory snatched from her grasp when she lost the last hole and had to settle for a half.

Now, England play Scotland, who beat Ireland 6-1 on the opening day’s play.
