A scheme to encourage new young golfers in Wiltshire
– involving the county ladies and ELGA –
has won a top Golf Foundation award.
Around 2700 school children were introduced to golf
last year, thanks to the Wiltshire junior golf project.
Hundreds went on to subsidised coaching sessions
at golf clubs across the county, which included high-successful
girls-only groups.
Now the project, which brings together the whole
golfing community with the educational and local authority
sectors, has won the Critchley Award, which is given
to a major partnership that helps the development
of grass roots golf.
Di Gritt, Wiltshire ladies’ county junior organiser,
commented: “This is a wonderful project which
is having a lot of success. It is definitely bringing
girls and boys into golf.
“It shows how important it is that we all work
together and shows what can be achieved when we do.”
Now, Wiltshire ladies are determined to make the
most of the interest shown by girls. They are working
with Sharon Heeley, one of ELGA’s girls’
development officers, and have set up a junior girls’
committee which will foster the enthusiasm with a
range of taster sessions, coaching opportunities and
competitions for handicap and non-handicap players.
Sharon said: “Girls have a hugely extended
range of activities to take part in. The first few
sessions of the year have been very well supported
and I have no doubt that we will see an increase in
the number of junior girls.”
