Surrey girls take tips from Laura Davies
14 December 2005

A group of Surrey girls have been taking tips from the top at a clinic with golfing superstar Laura Davies.

She gave a ten-minute lesson to each of the youngsters who attended the event at Sutton Green, spent time with them and their parents in the clubhouse and gave them all a signed memento of the day.

Davies, who has won more than 60 professional titles worldwide, also played a few holes with junior county champion Ellis Keenan and county champion Alison Coffey.

“The whole day is so inspirational,” said Surrey 's junior organiser, Madeleine Pocknell.

This is the fifth year that Davies has given the clinic, which takes her back to her roots as a Surrey amateur. Her pupils were aged between six and 14 and were all the winners of nine-hole par three competitions for girls without handicaps.

This year they included a six-year-old who would have won in any age group and a 10-year-old who set a record score of 28. Altogether about 40 girls take part in the competition series, which also teaches course etiquette.

Madeleine said: “The standard of golf since the start has improved dramatically and the girls who come to most sessions are becoming
great friends.”
