Ben wins The De Vere Belfry trip in ELGA Spot the Ball competition
8 August 2005

Golf fan Ben Day has teed up a trip to The De Vere Belfry after he beat hundreds of rivals to win an ELGA competition at the Weetabix Women’s British Open Championship.

Ben, from Melton Mowbray, was among more than 850 people who entered the Spot the Ball competition on the ELGA stand at Royal Birkdale. Five runners-up each receive a pair of ECCO shoes.

Ben’s prize visit to The De Vere Belfry includes an 18-hole round of golf on the legendary Brabazon course; a 90-minute session with a professional on the MAT-T animation system at the PGA National Golf Academy; an overnight stay for two and a two-hour bio-thermal treatment for two in the AquaSpa.

The five runners-up who each win a pair of ECCO shoes are: brothers William and Edward Morris from Southport; Jo Weir from Blackpool; Alex McGuckin from Southport; and Yvonne Archer from Seckford.

The ELGA stand promoted golf to both juniors and adults and was a huge hit with thousands of spectators. Over 3000 goody bags were handed out and these were visible among the crowds and on television broadcasts.

Attractions on the stand included internet access on a large plasma screen which frequently linked to the ELGA website and gave the latest news from the English Girls’ Championship in Hampshire.

Pauline Perla, ELGA’s Chief Executive, said “Raising the profile of the Association has been an important element of work over the last year. Getting more people to take up golf is a key target for the England Golf Partnership and the strategic plan for golf in England. Ladies and girls are underrepresented groups and having a presence at such a high profile event was very worthwhile. We hope we have shown that we are a modern, forward thinking organisation. Most of all we want to ensure that there will always be English players competing in this event in the future and to do that we need more players to take up the sport”.

ELGA’s presence at the Women’s British Open was welcomed by Andy Salmon, secretary of the Ladies’ Golf Union, which runs the championship.

He said: “The 2005 championship was a huge success in so many ways with in excess of 65,000 spectators attending over the four days.
“The LGU was particularly delighted to see the ELGA stand attracting so much attention from juniors and indeed golfers of all ages. We applaud the work being done by ELGA and feel that the ELGA presence at the event demonstrates the way in which our two organisations can work together for the good of the ladies' game.”
