English seniors halve with Oxford ladies

The English senior ladies’ team halved their annual foursomes match against the Oxford University Ladies’ Golf Club at Huntercombe.

The match was finely balanced and the outcome was in doubt until the last group had played the final hole. In this deciding game, the seniors took the advantage when they won the 17th to go one up, but the university players struck back, winning the last hole to square the scoreline.

The match was played in a continuous downpour but it failed to dampen the enthusiasm or skill of the competitors. For example, Susan Pickles and Belinda Silver, from the seniors’ side, scored close to par despite the conditions.

Results (English senior ladies’ names first): Susan Pickles & Belinda Silver beat Emma Parr & Fiona Johnston 8/7. Shelagh Cormack & Margaret Maisey lost to Nicole Saad and Jennifer Andrews 5/3. Elaine James & Sheelagh Murray halved with Meredith Riedel and Sonavi Chopra.
